Makris reef is the middle of three reefs along Makronisos island, in Greek waters. Its position relative to the surrounding sea exposes it to an almost permanent current, which drives excellent visibility consistently above 25 metres and supports a wide variety of underwater life.
The reef runs from a shallowest point of 4 metres down to 24–26 metres at its deepest edge, giving a moderate vertical range suited to Open Water and Advanced Open Water divers. Water temperature ranges from 27 to 30 °C, with the best diving season running October through April.
The strong, near-permanent current is the defining characteristic of the site and accounts for both its exceptional clarity and its biological richness. Divers should be comfortable with current and be prepared for drift conditions; the site is listed as suitable for OW to AOW level.
