Sponge Reef lies off Maratua, one of the atolls in the Derawan archipelago along the coast of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This part of the Celebes Sea is known for its reef systems and channels linking small islands, reached by boat from the villages on Maratua. Divers have also reported Anna's Chromodoris and Coi's Goniobranchus nudibranchs here, along with Graeffe's sea cucumbers and the Puntang goby, making it a site worth a slow look for smaller reef life alongside the coral structure itself.
