Steep Island is a wall dive off the north end of a cigar-shaped island near Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada, and one of the area's most popular dive sites. The island does not look steep above the surface, but the marine chart shows where it got its name.
On the outside north end the bottom drops to over 40 metres (130 feet) just a few metres off the rugged shore. The wall is well populated with sponges and other invertebrates that cling to the rock. At the bottom of the wall are large boulders covered in life.
Huge clusters of northern feather duster tube worms are the signature feature. Fish use the cracks and crevices for protection. You will see tiger banded rockfish, maybe a juvenile yellow eye rockfish, and for sure lots of kelp greenlings, copper and quillback rockfish and even large ling cod.
Currents are a concern, and divers should have advanced skills to manage their buoyancy.
