Vanishing Rock is an exposed reef pinnacle located just off Cooper Island in the British Virgin Islands, whose name comes from the way its top breaks the surface before vanishing back below the waves. The site sits at depths of 15 to 45 feet (approximately 4.5 to 13.7 metres), making it accessible to intermediate-level divers.
The pinnacle is best known for holding one of the largest colonies of pillar coral in the BVI, a formation that draws divers from across the region. Beyond the pillar coral, the reef features sporadic coral formations, swaying sea fans, and barrel sponges that together create a varied and textured underwater landscape.
Marine life at Vanishing Rock is notably active. Large numbers of sergeant majors congregate inside the pillar coral, while horse-eye jacks form swirling tornadoes in the current around the site. Schools of blue chromis accompany divers throughout the dive, and sea fans shelter flamingo tongues and brittle stars among their branches.
Current at this site can be quite strong, and divers should check conditions before entering. The exposed position of the pinnacle means current is a consistent factor and a key part of the site's character, bringing with it the fish aggregations the site is known for.
