1000 Steps is a shore dive on the northwest coast of Bonaire, reached by a stone staircase that leads down from the parking area to a secluded beach. The stairs number far fewer than the name suggests, but the climb back up in gear can feel long, and the entry is the one real challenge.
The beach is made of stones rather than sand. Entry into the water is easy, and sea turtles often come up for air in the shallows. Most of the fish and other life is between 10 and 15 m (33 to 50 ft), and going deeper gives less to see, which suits beginners limited to 18 m (60 ft). A big school of fish passes through the shallows at around 6 m (20 ft), and there is no current.
The reef has pagoda-like staghorn coral structures that house reef fish, and there is a dramatic wall drop-off. Hawksbill turtles, barracuda and moray eels are seen, and the site is also popular for snorkelling.
Confirmed by our research team, reported by independent divers, or observed nearby via iNaturalist — each entry is labelled with its source.
