Alligator Reef is a classic Florida Keys reef located within the Alligator Reef Special Protection Area near the Alligator Reef Lighthouse, off Islamorada, FL. The reef is known for its broad coral formations and large coral spur-and-groove systems, with depths ranging from 15 to 70 feet (roughly 4.5 to 21 m). It is also an active site for coral outplanting and monitoring carried out under the I.CARE restoration project.
The reef holds an exceptional concentration of marine life, with more than 600 fish species positively identified here. A typical dive includes sightings of moray eels, nurse sharks resting along the reef, an abundance of groupers, spiny lobsters, barracuda, and various turtle species including sea turtles. The large coral spur systems provide structure throughout the dive and serve as a consistent landmark for navigation.
Alligator Reef is rated an intermediate dive site, though the verified maximum depth of 7.6 m (25 ft) and the reef's generally accessible terrain make shallower portions suitable for less experienced divers as well. Visibility is rated as great. Dives are conducted near the lighthouse, which acts as a surface reference point.
