The Avantis III is a cargo ship wreck off Agistri, Greece. She left Mesolongi on 19 November 2004, struck the island of Dorousa and sank within 20 minutes, and the ship's cook died. She now rests upright on the seabed.
The wreck is roughly 80 metres long and 13 metres wide, so one dive cannot cover it. The bow begins at 17 metres, the propeller sits at 41 metres and the maximum depth is about 48 metres. The bridge is in remarkably good condition with instruments and control panels still in place, and the ship's name can be read near the bow. The propeller gives access toward the engine room, and trained wreck divers can enter the cargo holds, where cargo remnants and the large rupture from the collision can be seen.
Access is by boat only, and boats moor to a permanent buoy whose line also serves as the descent and ascent line. Visibility is good, usually enough to see part of the wreck from the surface, with only a mild current. Marine life includes moray eels, octopus, nudibranchs, sponges, tubeworms and fireworms.
This is a deep dive, and penetration needs proper wreck training. The interior is still fragile, ceiling and wall plating can detach, and corroded metal edges are sharp, so gloves and full exposure protection are advised. The wreck sometimes releases fuel residue.
