Barrel Sponge Wall is a wall site on the East End of Grand Cayman, off Queen's Highway. It is named for its abundance of giant barrel sponges, and it has 17 giant examples over 15 years old. Barrel sponges are more common on the north-facing sites, and this is where that is most evident.
The mooring pin sits at 59 ft (18 m) and the maximum depth is 100 ft (30.5 m). It is about a 20 minute boat ride from the dock.
The terrain is made of tall, sloped buttresses that run down toward the drop-off along a sloping sand bottom. You can work your way up and around these features. Water clarity along this stretch of wall is excellent, and divers floating in the distance against terrain fading into the blue give a strong sense of scale.
The sponges filter the water and vent it through their natural chimneys. Climbing into the sponges is not allowed.
