Big Fish is a reef dive site off Atauro Island, Timor-Leste, designed around encounters with open-water pelagic species in strong current conditions. The site reaches a maximum depth of 26 metres and is dived from a boat, putting divers directly into the mid-water column among large schools of fish.
The defining experience here is the current-driven pelagic action: Barracuda, Trevally, Tuna, and Mackerel school through the site regularly, and on lucky days Hammerhead Sharks and Dolphins make an appearance. The reef also holds cryptic macro life including frogfish, nudibranchs, cuttlefish, seagrass ghost pipefish, Indian walkman, scorpionfish, leaf fish, ribbon eels, and turtles.
Currents are strong and can make the dive genuinely challenging, so the site is not suitable for snorkellers and is restricted to experienced divers holding an Advanced Open Water certification with a minimum of 60 logged dives. A wide-angle lens is recommended for photography given the schooling pelagic subjects.
