Black Bird Point sits along the coastline of Utila, one of the Bay Islands off the Caribbean coast of Honduras, an area served by dive operators based near Utila Town and part of the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system. The site reaches a maximum depth of around 21 metres. Divers have reported a wide range of reef life here, including Atlantic blue tang, bluehead wrasse, redband and stoplight parrotfish, and schoolmaster snapper, along with purple sea fans along the reef structure. Yellow stingrays and even whale sharks have also been reported in the area, and blue land crabs and land hermit crabs turn up near the shoreline. As with much of Utila's coast, the mix of reef and open water here draws both small reef fish and occasional larger passersby.
