Christmas Point lies at the north-west tip of Similan Island 9, also called Koh Ba-Ngu, in Thailand. It is a maze of massive granite boulders that descends in tiers from the shallows to 40 metres, with swim-throughs and arches, and tall coral and sea fan lined crevices. The granite faces have scoop shapes carved into them by erosion, and the best-known swim-through is at 18 to 20 metres. It is a site to bring a camera.
Currents run from moderate to strong, depending on the day, and visibility is often 15 to 30 metres. With the depth and currents, it is for intermediate and advanced divers.
Large schools of fusiliers and snappers weave between the boulders. Ribbon eels and orange-spotted pipefish live around the edge of the site, anemones with porcelain crabs live in the crevices and nudibranchs crawl over the boulders. Napoleon wrasse are found here and eagle rays pass by occasionally. Leopard sharks come here and black and white tip reef sharks have been reported, although rarely in recent times. Giant trevally, barracuda, tuna, groupers and sweetlips are also found.
