Drishaig Reef is a shore-entry reef dive on Loch Fyne, Scotland's longest sea loch, situated near the top end of the loch close to where a freshwater river meets the saltwater. The surrounding landscape is steeply sided and fjord-like, with hills rising sharply on either side.
The reef runs at around 10 metres and the maximum depth reaches 30 metres. Entry is from shore through a band of bladderwrack seaweed typical of rocky shorelines, and divers head southwest to reach the 10-metre depth before turning southeast to follow the reef contour. There is no current, and conditions below the surface are calm and still despite light wind and chop at the surface.
Visibility deserves a note: heavy rain and the peaty surrounding soil cause the river water flowing into the loch to run a deep red, colouring the upper water column and producing a shimmery, blurred halocline layer where fresh and saltwater mix at 3–4 metres depth. Below that transition zone the water clears and visibility is good. Water temperature is around 11°C.
The reef holds a busy community of bottom-dwellers including dogfish, catsharks, blennies, Dublin Bay prawns, hermit crabs, long-clawed spiny lobsters, velvet swimming crabs, shore crabs, moon whelk, and other invertebrates active across the reef. The site is rated suitable for beginners.
