Los Cancajos is a lava-bottom dive site on the east coast of La Palma, offering multiple distinct areas accessible from several entry points along the shore, allowing for a variety of dives without repetition. The terrain combines shallow canyons and a colourfully overgrown "fairy-tale forest" in the shallows, a prominent lava formation known as the "Claw" at around 20 metres, and deeper lava flows criss-crossed by canyons that extend toward the maximum depth of 30 metres. The "Mini-Riff" near an aeroplane wing sits at just under 30 metres and is noted for regularly holding surprises. Inside the bay, the water is sheltered by breakwaters and calm enough for courses and relaxed observation in the shallows.
The Chapel Cave is a wide, shallow lava tunnel where divers can surface inside; the cave is populated with small shrimp and crabs moving across the ceiling, best viewed by torch. Deeper on the right-hand side, fields of red gorgonians and forests of black coral make for striking scenery, and the area around the Claw is consistently active with fish. The site is rated for experienced and advanced divers, particularly for the deeper sections featuring the gorgonian fields and black coral forest.
