Mexico Rocks is a shallow patch reef and marine reserve located off the northern tip of Ambergris Caye, on the Belizean Barrier Reef, reached by a roughly 20-minute boat ride from San Pedro. The site is defined by a dense cluster of coral heads, with boulder coral formations rising up to 3.5 m (12 ft) tall and nearly breaking the surface, as well as dramatic canyon walls and a cave through the coral that boat operators visit but do not penetrate.
The reef sits in just 8–12 feet (roughly 2.4–3.7 m) of water, shallow enough for snorkelers to observe without submerging and ideal for divers looking to extend bottom time. The site is protected by the barrier reef from ocean swells, keeping currents light and conditions calm, with excellent visibility throughout.
The coral heads shelter puffer fish, parrot fish, lobsters, eels, and colorful juvenile fish in their nooks and crannies, while sea fans, azure vase sponges, and butterfly fish add further variety across the reef structure. Sea turtles and conch are also present at the site.
Mexico Rocks is well suited to beginners and snorkelers of any experience level given its protected exposure, shallow depth, and calm conditions. Access is by boat only.
