The S/S Skiftet is an ice-breaking passenger steamship that sank in 1916 off the Aland Islands, reached by boat from Mariehamn. She was in military use at the time and carried 91 people, most of them Russian soldiers. The ship hit a mine and sank, and 86 of those aboard were lost.
The wreck now lies in two pieces. Divers who stay around the aft section find fragile reminders of the ship's civilian past: a decorative porcelain sink that is still remarkably intact, a piece of a glass lamp shade, and part of a porcelain plate lying on the hull. The water is the murky Baltic, so visibility is limited, and the contrast of the white fittings against the rust and mussel-covered metal makes them stand out.
