About this site
Swami Rock is an underwater cliff off Trincomalee on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka. It drops away beneath the cliff that was once the site of a Hindu temple, which makes it an unusual dive that is equal parts archaeology and marine biology.
The Portuguese destroyed the temple in the 17th century, and its statues and stone masonry tumbled into the sea, where they remain. Statues of Shiva, Ganesh, Saraswathi and more than ten others lie submerged at 5 to 24 m, scattered among massive coral heads.
The dive has a pinnacle, a wall and a sandy bottom, with a maximum depth of about 24 m. Visibility is good.
