Umm Gamar is a long, isolated reef formed by an underwater mountain, close to the island of the same name and about 90 minutes from Hurghada. It is graded as a beginner dive.
At the island there is a plateau and a wall that runs down more than 30 metres. Three large blocks stand along the wall, and one of them has a small cave beneath it. The blocks shelter thousands of glassfish and are covered in brightly coloured soft corals.
A glance into the blue may be rewarded with a grey reef shark, or a passing school of barracuda or tuna. Along the reef divers can spot a large turtle and almost certainly giant morays. Near the end of the dive, the small blocks on the plateau are the place to look for stonefish and crocodilefish.
