Anilao Pier is a very shallow night dive at the village of Anilao in the Philippines, in 5 to 10 metres. The pier is a cement dock that looks unremarkable, but it is a macro hotspot and suits beginners.
Over the sand and sea grass you move to the pier wall, where holes hide glass shrimp, banded coral shrimp, crabs and several eels that are docile and curious about your lights. Move slowly because the whole dive is shallow. Bobtail squid are also found here, and divers see them in iridescent colour.
The pier is also used for blackwater dives, where lights set in the sand draw larval fish, molting shrimp, jellyfish and other translucent animals up from the deep.
