Canyon Reef is a reef dive site off Roatan, Honduras, reached by a short boat ride from Half Moon Bay. The site is built around a series of reef fingers, sandy cuts, and coral canyons that gradually slope downward, with a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). The dive profile takes you up and down through the channels, which is unconventional but manageable at this depth, and from the deeper sections you can drift toward the slope or follow the shallow reef back to the boat.
The terrain mixes coral canyon passages with open sandy areas, giving the dive a varied character that keeps the time moving. The soft corals and reef structure offer numerous hiding spots for frogfish — listening carefully can help locate them. Scanning over the sand patches is the best strategy for spotting eagle rays and other larger animals passing through.
Canyon Reef is suited to intermediate and experienced divers. The up-and-down profile through the reef fingers requires reasonable buoyancy control, though the shallow maximum depth keeps the situation workable.
