Carval Rock is a rock formation dive site off St. Thomas, USVI, dived on its sheltered south side before moving through "The Cut," a shallow, submerged passage that slices through the rock. The route lets current carry divers 360 degrees around the formation, past dramatic rocky terrain and through a narrow canyon. The sheer wall on the east end drops to 80 feet (24.4 m), while shallow coral gardens lie on the return leg toward the boat.
The narrow canyon running through the rock is packed with baitfish and tarpon, and the shallow coral gardens on the way back are reliable spots to look for nurse sharks, reef squid, and octopus. Soft corals feature along the formations throughout the circuit.
Entry is by boat, and divers drop down on the south side before kicking hard against the stiff current flowing through The Cut, then riding it around the full circumference of the rock. The site carries a recommended minimum skill level of intermediate, reflecting the strong current that runs through the passage.
