El Bajo is a seamount reef about 45 minutes by panga from La Paz in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, reaching a maximum depth of 18 metres. The reef is dense with groupers, turtles and moray eels, and it regularly attracts schooling hammerhead sharks, mobula rays and goliath groupers.
Winter brings mobula rays and the occasional humpback whale, and humpbacks have been spotted surfacing above the seamount during those months.
Confirmed by our research team, reported by independent divers, or observed nearby via iNaturalist — each entry is labelled with its source.
