Flat Rock is a rocky beach dive at Palos Verdes, in the South Bay of LA County, rated 9 out of 10 for difficulty. It takes good to great cardiovascular fitness.
Most of the points of interest lie between 15 and 40 feet (4.5 to 12 metres). Lobster are plentiful, and octopus, garibaldi, blacksmith and a few tree-fish are commonly seen or photographed.
The trail to and from the entry is extremely dangerous, and beach conditions need an assessment before you gear up. Taking a local dive boat instead saves the walk and swim. Visibility runs 20 to 35 feet (6 to 11 metres), and fall and winter are the best months. Use a float, flag, anchor and drop line, and keep a phone and oxygen first aid kit available.
