Gallanach Reef

Gallanach Reef is an easy shore dive in a sheltered bay, with Kerrera island directly across the water. The reef can be dived at all states of tide, with an average depth of around 10 m, and it suits entry level divers or anyone testing new kit. High tide brings the easiest access and the clearest water.

The reef is a large granite rock that rises from the seabed at 9 m to 1.5 m below the surface. It forms a nice wall with abundant life and sheltered water, and it is a good target for navigation dives. Depths stay shallow when you keep to the south.

The route starts from the slipway, heading directly west. Take a bearing on the white house on Kerrera island directly across the water, reach the 8 m contour and follow it south until you meet the reef. The popular route keeps the reef on your left and follows the outside of the wall until you want to return. The far end of the reef has plenty of areas where large edible crab and scallops can be found.
