Koh Bon Pinnacle, also called Hin Luang or Yellow Rock, is a huge submerged rock about 200 metres off the west ridge of Koh Bon island in Thailand. Its summit sits at 18 metres, and it drops to over 40 metres, and in places past 50. Dark volcanic rock is covered in bright yellow soft corals.
No buoy or line marks the pinnacle, and fairly strong currents often run, so the dive begins with a negative entry to reach the rock quickly and shelter from the current. That and the depth make it a dive for experienced divers only. From the deep drop-off on the north side a long swim at 28 to 30 metres leads to the reef.
It can be very good for mantas and sharks. A cave full of nurse sharks was found here a couple of years ago. Soft coral trees, gorgonian sea fans and barrel sponges grow on it, and the best months are January to April.
Confirmed by our research team, reported by independent divers, or observed nearby via iNaturalist — each entry is labelled with its source.
