Mayor Island

Mayor Island (Tuhua) is a volcanic island located 35 km from Tauranga Harbour entrance in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, offering multiple dive sites along its coastline, including a protected Marine Reserve at the northern end with some of the area's most impressive diving terrain. Walls form the primary underwater feature, dropping to a maximum depth of 30 m.

Visibility at Mayor Island is frequently the best found anywhere in the Bay of Plenty, a direct result of the island's remote position far from the mainland and its river outflows. Current is generally light at the site.

Because of its distance from shore, Mayor Island is not regularly visited and typically requires a dedicated charter boat trip. Its remoteness means diving is largely weather-dependent, and trips are usually planned specifically around suitable conditions.
