Mendocino Headlands, also known as Pipeline, is a rocky shore dive on the Mendocino coast of northern California, with a maximum depth of about 12 m.
The site is only diveable because of a flat rocky outcropping that acts as a landing pad. Waves push divers onto it one at a time, so you have to time each diver against the swell. A big swell can be too large to catch.
The surge can lift a diver off the landing pad, push them back and slam them into the rocks above it. As the water falls away it sucks you down a slope covered in mussels, so you need to grip the rocks and hold on. Several waves may come in a row.
After leaving the water divers make a steep hike up the rocks. The trickiness of the entry and exit is what makes this a favourite site along the north coast.
