The Naeco is a 428 ft (130 m) tanker sunk by torpedo in 1942, lying about 38 nautical miles due south of Morehead City, North Carolina. The ship sits in two pieces about a mile apart, in 120 to 140 ft (37 to 43 m), as far offshore as dive boats venture. It is rated advanced.
Built in 1918, she was travelling alone and unarmed from Houston to New Jersey with fuel oil when the U-124 torpedoed her on 23 March 1942. The fuel ignited and 24 of 38 crew died.
Clear, warm Gulf Stream water is standard, with visibility generally 60 to 100 ft (18 to 30 m) and summer temperature 76 to 82 F (24 to 28 C). The depth limits bottom time substantially.
The stern has more relief and is visited more often. It is a vibrant reef with a wide variety of life, and it is known for sharks, including sand tigers, black tips and sand bars.
