Njao Gap (Northern Reef) is a reef dive site on the northwest coast of Pemba Island, Tanzania, situated at the northern side of Njao Gap where the open Pemba Channel meets the lagoon. The coral garden begins at around 5 m and slopes gently down to 18 m, at which point the reef plummets abruptly into depths beyond safe diving range, giving the site a dramatic drop-off character.
The reef terrain transitions from a sloping coral garden to a sudden vertical plunge, creating a striking wall profile. The site is dived as a drift, with divers using the northbound current to sweep them through the gap and into the lagoon. Visibility is generally good, though it can deteriorate during an outgoing current.
Marine life at the northern reef includes large Napoleon wrasse, green turtles, and dense concentrations of diverse reef fish species throughout the coral garden.
Current at Njao Gap North can be strong, and the drift entry takes divers through the gap with the northbound flow. Despite the strength of the current, the drift route through the gap into the lagoon carries no particular risk when timed correctly. Access is by boat, consistent with the boat-based diving approach used across Pemba's northwest coast sites.
