Pechiguera is a reef-wall dive site located behind the lighthouse at the southern tip of Lanzarote, in the open waters of the strait between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, exposed directly to the Atlantic Ocean. It is considered one of the more serious dives in the Playa Blanca area and is suited to advanced and technical divers.
The underwater terrain features a large rocky formation and a submarine canyon that runs along the island's edge, dropping from around 20 metres down to 50 metres and beyond. The listed maximum depth for recreational diving here is 30 metres, though the canyon itself descends to more than 80 metres, making it a significant training ground for technical divers. A lava arch and coral formations are also present along the wall.
Being fully open-ocean, the site attracts pelagic and large marine life: manta rays, cetaceans, angel sharks, large schools of tuna and barracuda, and turtles have all been observed here. When current is running, the area fills with considerably more life, giving the dive a blue-water character and an unpredictable, open-sea atmosphere.
Conditions are the decisive factor at Pechiguera. The site's Atlantic exposure means it is not always diveable; in anything more than moderately adverse weather it becomes impractical. Current is medium and visibility is generally good when conditions allow. Because of the exposure, current, and depth potential, this dive is restricted to experienced and technical divers.
