Salem Express Wreck lies off Safaga on the Red Sea coast of Egypt. She was a passenger ferry that ran between the ports of Safaga in Egypt and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, and she sank shortly after midnight in mid-December 1991 after colliding with Hyndman reef on the Egyptian coast.
The loss of life was heavy, and the majority of the passengers were pilgrims returning from Mecca. Many bodies were recovered, but the recovery was eventually halted because of the danger involved, and the openings of the wreck were later sealed with plates welded across them. The wreck is a maritime grave, and a dive here is an emotional one that calls for the utmost respect.
