Shaab Abu Nuhas, known as "Tin Reef," sits approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes north of El Gouna in the Red Sea, and has been a navigational hazard since the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. Its reputation as a ship-killer is well earned: the reef's slopes hold the wrecks of the Carnatic (sunk September 1869), Marcus (May 1978), Kimon M (December 1978), Chrisoula K (August 1981), and San Juan (January 1982). In February 1987 the 213-metre Cargo Olden, sailing under a Panamanian flag, also sank here, though the wreck itself has never been located — only an anchor lying at 50 metres marks the site.
The site reaches a maximum depth of 30 m, with the wrecks resting on the reef's sloping sides across a bottom of wreck structure and reef terrain. Water temperature sits at 28°C.
Marine life across the site includes moray eels, stonefish, scorpionfish, lionfish, flute fish, pufferfish, rays, snappers, clownfish, octopuses, groupers, barracudas, and murenes.
Current is generally light but can arrive unpredictably from the north, turning the dive into a drift; certified divers of all levels are welcome, though the unpredictable current character should be factored into planning.
