Taotoi is an outer-reef wall and canyon dive on the north coast of Moorea, French Polynesia, just outside and east of the narrow Taotoi Pass. Depths run from 35 to 60 ft (11 to 18 m), with no bottom in sight along the drop. Two moorings serve the site and it is reached by dinghy or dive boat.
The pass is fairly shallow, which produces a considerable rip-tide, big swells and occasional breakers, so the boat ride in and out can be rough.
Expect strong surge and some current, so the usual approach is to swim up-current first and let the current carry you back to the mooring. Visibility was about 100 ft (30 m). It is too deep and too surgy for snorkelling.
Hills and valleys of the outer reef lead to a first wall next to the mooring with an overhang full of big-eyed squirrelfish. Beautiful coral formations are everywhere. Six or seven blacktip reef sharks were in view at any time, with a swarm of blue-striped snapper, several big triggerfish, a Napoleon wrasse known as Jojo and a 6 ft (1.8 m) giant moray that lives near the mooring.
