The Zingara Wreck is a 30-metre (100-foot) coastal freighter sitting in 35 metres (117 feet) of water off Sosua, Dominican Republic. The vessel was intentionally sunk for diving purposes in the early 1990s — one account dates this to 1992, another to 1993 — and it now lies in the open ocean roughly 15 minutes by boat from Sosua Beach. The hull has since become encrusted with coral and supports a variety of marine life, and the wreck is suitable for penetration and exploration.
The site sits at a maximum depth of around 35 metres and, because that is relatively deep, it is typically dived as a multi-level dive: divers work the wreck itself and then move to a reef located to the south, stretching a dive to 35–40 minutes rather than spending the full bottom time on the wreck alone. The wreck is advanced-level diving and is recommended for experienced divers only.
Resident marine life includes a large green moray and big barracuda that have made the wreck their home, along with a broader variety of species across the wreck and surrounding reef. Water temperature runs 26–29°C year-round.
Being in open ocean, the Zingara is exposed to currents and to harsh winter swells, which are the primary hazards at the site. Visibility is generally great. Advanced certification and experience with current are advisable before diving here.
