Akumal is a shallow reef and seagrass dive site on the Riviera Maya coast, known primarily as a reliable place to encounter marine turtles in calm, beginner-friendly conditions. The bottom is seagrass and the maximum depth reaches just 4 metres, making it one of the most accessible ocean dives in the region.
Marine life at Akumal centres on marine turtles, which are regularly spotted by divers and snorkellers throughout the site. Beyond turtles, the site has also produced encounters with dolphins — including a pod with calves — a hammerhead shark at approximately 12 metres, southern stingrays, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks, and green sea turtles. The November-to-April season marks the principal visiting period.
Conditions are well suited to new divers: current runs light and the shallow depth keeps the experience manageable. The site is recommended for beginners and is used as a setting for introductory scuba programmes, though the range of marine life also attracts underwater photographers looking for a relaxed ocean day.
