Biddeford Pool is a large and unusual natural tidal pool in Saco Bay on the south coast of Maine, known locally as The Gut. At low tide it is little more than flat land, while at high tide it fills and becomes a good place to dive.
The pool is shallow, with a maximum depth of under 25 feet (8 metres). Entry is from the shore over gravel, after which the bottom is covered with algal beds.
Fish begin to appear at about 3 metres, including a school of striped bass. A sea lion may be seen following the school and feeding on it, and these animals are sometimes found resting on the nearby rocks.
Confirmed by our research team, reported by independent divers, or observed nearby via iNaturalist — each entry is labelled with its source.
