Challenger, also called Challenger Bay, sits between Ribbon Reef 9 and 10 on the Great Barrier Reef. It is a long, relaxed dive from 5 to 20 metres.
The site starts shallow, at 5 metres, and slopes gently over extensive hard coral fields that are colourful and healthy, laced with sandy gullies. Hover patiently and you will catch garden eels swaying in the current. Stingrays glide over the sand, and white-tip reef sharks often patrol the outer edges.
It makes a good afternoon dive, when the light plays through the corals and picks out the pink anemonefish in their homes.
