Hans Reef is a dive site at Gili Air, the island closest to Lombok and the quietest of the three Gilis. It is reached by a short boat ride and has a maximum depth of about 25 m.
The site has a sand bottom with close access to the reef, which makes it a good training area for divers on open water and advanced courses. A large barrel sponge here is often used by green turtles as a resting place. It is rated beginner, with light current and good visibility, and the Gili guides list it among the best beginner sites because of its shallow entry points and gradual slopes.
Hans Reef suits macro lovers, with frogfish, nudibranchs, octopus and cuttlefish.
Night diving: this is one of the most popular night dives around the Gili Islands. Divers hunt for bobtail squid, dwarf cuttlefish, reef squid, coconut octopus, sponge crabs and sea slugs. Mandarin fish are occasionally seen at dusk.
