Purple Rain Reef is a reef dive along the southwest corner of Grenada, with a profile of about 20 to 80 feet (6 to 25 metres). It is named for the large schools of violet Creole wrasse that swarm over it. It is often dived as a drift in a steady current of around 2 knots.
The reef starts with a shallow plateau of soft and hard corals broken by sand channels, and leads to a sloping reef edge that varies from about 60 to 90 feet (18 to 27 metres). Giant sponges of every colour cover the reef. The site stretches west and then south, so a variety of dive profiles is possible.
On calm days the shallow plateau suits beginners and photographers, with good natural light and healthy, diverse reef. When the current runs harder it becomes a favourite for drift divers and more advanced divers.
Halfway through the dive the route passes over the first of three telecommunication lines, and small schools of barracuda shadow the cable over the sand channels. Angelfish, queen triggerfish, grunts, trunkfish and filefish swirl through the wrasse. Southern stingrays, eagle rays, turtles and the odd nurse shark also visit.
