Sombrero Reef lies a few miles off Marathon in the Florida Keys, a protected Sanctuary Preservation Area where fishing, spearfishing and anchoring are prohibited. It is billed as the third-largest barrier reef in the world, with a lighthouse marking the area, and it is reached by boat.
The reef has a spur-and-groove layout, with fingers of dense shallow coral separated by sandy channels. Depths range from 2 to 30 feet (0.6 to 9 m), with the spurs in 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 m) and the channels about 25 feet (7.5 m) deep.
Fish are abundant and unafraid, and parrotfish, angelfish, grouper and snapper are easy to find.
