Gamat Bay is a sheltered bay on the west coast of Nusa Penida, about 30 minutes by boat, with an impressive reef wall dropping away at the edge of the bay. It requires Open Water certification, and depths run from 5 to 30 metres or more.
The wall has cracks and crevices that shelter reef life, with the occasional turtle. Look out into the blue for sharks, rays and Mola mola in season. Coming back up the slope you pass table corals and coral bommies full of sheltering fish, and the shallow main part of the bay is a good place for a safety stop in some of the clearest water around Nusa Penida. In calm conditions the 10 to 20 metre range is good for macro life among table corals, bommies and slopes covered in sponges and whip corals, with frogfish, nudibranchs and mantis shrimp, and reef sharks sometimes seen.
Visibility is 15 to 30 metres. Currents are mild to moderate but can be tricky at certain points.
