Amazon is an offshore reef in the Tofo area of Mozambique, about 20 km from Tofo and the furthest and potentially most challenging site in the area. Depths run from about 26 to 30 m, and the depth, current direction and reef topography make it suitable only for divers with Advanced certification or higher.
The site is not dived in strong currents, and it suits experienced divers who have no difficulty with a rapid descent.
Sharks and turtles. White-tip reef sharks and leopard sharks sleep on the sandy bottom or in the various caves, where a loggerhead turtle is also found. Black-tip sharks are seen as well, and hammerheads are known to patrol at times. In whale season the reefs here carry the sound of humpback whale song, sometimes strongly enough to feel the vibrations through the body.
Reef life. The reef has a colourful array of reef fish, with schools of barracuda, bannerfish and surgeonfish. Divers swim through parting shoals of fish to reach the caves, and rays and game fish glide overhead.
