Batu Rufus is a dive site on the west side of Rufus Island in the Penemu chain of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The name means Rufus Rock, after the large limestone formation that extends out to the fringing coral reef. It is mainly walls with a few sloping reefs, and the maximum depth is about 25 metres.
The entry point is a sheltered lagoon at the south-west tip of the island, with sparkling blue water and a thriving hard coral garden in the shallows, which also makes a great snorkelling spot. From there you pass through a small swim-through lined with healthy sea fans at 5 metres to reach the deeper steep wall. Halfway through the dive the wall turns back to a sloping reef, then comes another wall that tops out at 15 metres, and the dive finishes in the coral garden at 5 metres for the safety stop. Giant barrel sponges grow on the steep walls.
Visibility is typically around 20 metres and the current is mild to medium, so the site works for less experienced divers as well as experienced ones.
Damselfish, chromis, schools of fusiliers, mackerel, Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, bluefin trevally, triggerfish and pufferfish are found, along with macro subjects such as pygmy seahorses and nudibranchs.
