The British Inventor (bow section) is the surviving remains of a British steam-driven oil tanker that was mined on 13 June 1940, lying on the Lulworth Banks south of Durdle Door on the Dorset coast. The rest of the hull was destroyed by the mine explosion, leaving only the bow section on the seabed. The wreck is known locally as the Scallop Wreck.
The wreck sits at a depth of 20–21 metres, consistent with a maximum of around 20.5 metres, and rests on the Lulworth Banks reef system. The surrounding banks vary in depth from around 10 metres down to approximately 22 metres, offering a mix of wreck and reef terrain to explore.
The site is renowned for the remarkable density of scallops that colonise both the wreck and the surrounding reef, giving it its local nickname. Shoals of bib and pollock greet divers on descent, and lobsters, crabs, wrasse, flatfish, and nudibranchs are regularly encountered across the broader reef system.
This is often planned as a drift dive across the Lulworth Banks. The site is rated at sports diver or intermediate level, suited to those with the appropriate certification and experience to handle drift conditions and depths around 20 metres.
