Captain Dan is a wreck dive off Pompano Beach, Florida. It is a 175 ft (53 m) long former Coast Guard tender that stands upright on the bottom with the bow pointing south. The top of the wheelhouse is at around 80 ft (24 m) and the ship sits at 110 ft (34 m), so the depth range is 80 to 110 ft (24 to 34 m). It is an anchor dive and is rated Advanced Open Water or equivalent experience. The current is medium.
The ship was commissioned as the Hollyhock, a US Coast Guard tender. After decommissioning it was bought by a missionary, then stranded by mechanical problems and towed to the Miami River, where it was sold to the Florida Boating Improvement Program to become an artificial reef. It was renamed Captain Dan in memory of Dan Garnsey, a charter fishing pioneer, and sunk on February 20, 1990 as part of Rodeo Reef.
The wreck is covered with fish. Large barracuda, grouper, amberjack and other schools frequent it. There have been two whale shark sightings here, a day and a year apart.
