About this site

Cathedral is a shark dive on Beqa Lagoon, in Fiji. The reef was formerly overfished and is now a marine protected area, and local villagers went from shark fishing to shark protection. The dive is a controlled, baited feed, tightly managed by the guides.

Divers sit on the coral free sea bed at around 20 to 25 m (66 to 82 ft), behind a low rock wall, and the show begins from there. Bull sharks glide past close enough to count their gill slits, and the current hums through the site. The guides keep the dive safe, calm and respectful.

Sharks. Up to six or seven tiger sharks can appear, along with a large number of bull sharks, lemon sharks and silvertips. Nurse sharks, grey reef sharks and white tip and black tip reef sharks are also regular visitors.

Visibility is better from May to October. Bull shark numbers are lower in November and December, when the resident bull sharks give birth in the river mouths.
