Palau's waters hold several World War II era Japanese wrecks from fighting in 1944, and the Wakatake was an Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer lost in this period. The site sits within the broader network of wrecks and reefs around Palau's lagoon and barrier reef system in Micronesia. Divers exploring the wreck have reported a range of invertebrate life settled on its structure, including blue Linckia sea stars, boring giant clams and smaller giant clams, Indo-Pacific rock-boring urchins, and sea cucumbers such as leopard, lollyfish, pineapple, and pinkfish varieties.
