El Cielo — Spanish for "Heaven" — is a shallow snorkelling site in the southern zone of the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, off the island of Cozumel, Mexico. It sits in a white-sand lagoon in turquoise shallows, reaching no more than roughly 1.4 metres (about 4 feet) at maximum depth, making it accessible to complete beginners and non-divers alike.
The bottom is flat white sand across the lagoon, with an adjacent feature called El Cielito sandbar forming a transition zone where the terrain shifts slightly. Visibility regularly exceeds 30 metres (100 feet) thanks to the slow, nutrient-rich current moving through the Cozumel Channel year-round. Water temperature ranges from 26–29°C, and the site can be visited throughout the year. Current at El Cielo is light.
The site is best known as a sea star sanctuary, with large starfish spread across the sand. The adjacent El Cielito sandbar hosts southern stingrays that bury into the substrate and garden eels that sway from their burrows. Tropical fish, rays, barracuda, and giant starfish are also recorded here.
Access is by boat, with vessels arriving at a mooring in the lagoon. The site sits within the Marine Park and is subject to CONANP management and rotation schedules. El Cielo draws heavy boat traffic between roughly 10 AM and 2 PM, when multiple large vessels can be anchored simultaneously and large numbers of visitors are in the water at once; arriving before or after that window gives a noticeably quieter experience. A no-touch briefing regarding sea stars is standard practice at responsible operations.
