Elly is one of three abandoned oil platforms standing offshore of Long Beach, California, alongside Eureka and Ellen. Their production days are over, and the rigs now work as artificial reefs. Elly is described as part of the most unique wall dive in California, and the surrounding bottom is reef.
The platform supports are covered in colourful growth and hold invertebrates, rockfish and sea lions. Some divers have reported seeing whales and great white sharks just beyond the rigs, swimming out in the blue.
The rigs are for advanced divers only. Conditions here are unpredictable and the platforms are effectively bottomless, so you need good buoyancy control and must be comfortable dealing with surge before you commit to the dive.
