Franks Crack is a deep wall dive on the west coast of Atauro Island, in Timor-Leste. The wall starts at 5 m and drops to 70 to 80 m, and it is covered in hard and soft corals. It is described as some of the best wall diving in the country.
Conditions are usually good here. Visibility is typically very good and the current is mild, so the site is dived as a drift. Big cracks run all along the wall, and crustaceans and juvenile fish use them to hide. The drift passes a wide variety of reef fish and pelagics, and turtles, tuna and Spanish mackerel are the lucky sightings. A wide-angle lens suits the scale of the wall.
The site needs Open Water certification, with most of the dive spent between 5 and 50 m, and snorkelling is possible over the shallow part of the wall. Depths on the wall run far beyond recreational limits.
