Gabr El Bint, meaning 'Tomb of the Girl' in Arabic, is a reef site about 7.5 kilometres south of the caves near Dahab, Egypt, inside the Nabq protected area. It can only be reached by camel or by boat from Dahab marina, and the boat ride takes about 60 minutes. Dives here run roughly 10 to 28 metres deep.
Two dives are done here. The northern side of the buttress is the more beautiful, with a wall that descends into the blue, decorated with many species of coral. You drop to 20 to 25 metres alongside massive boulders on the drop-off, which draw dense shoals of anthias and glassfish, and trevallies hunt fusiliers out in the blue. Some of the healthiest gorgonian fan coral in the Red Sea grows here. On the way back you ascend to about 10 metres, cross the saddle and follow a sandy ledge that runs parallel to the shore.
The ledge has coral heads with anthias, scorpionfish, parrotfish, crocodilefish, surgeonfish, triggerfish, trumpetfish, puffers, stingrays and very often a turtle. At its end, shoals of black-and-white snappers and twinspot snappers swim at 5 to 10 metres. The other side, known as the dark side, is a steep wall that drops to about 60 metres, cut by chasms, sandy ravines and overhangs, and covered in table coral.
